Burnout is coming for your MarCom team
COVID-19, and the crisis-upon-crisis that is 2020 in general, has been an amazing forcing function for the future. Any company that had a transformational change on its 10-year roadmap has been forced to consider how to implement those changes in a matter of months.
Marketing departments in general were already moving in the direction of digital transformation, including a focus on e-commerce, but shifting product lines and new areas of business are making marketing departments completely reimagine the ways they build relationships with their customers.
But an under-reported part of the story: how burned out many who work in marketing and communications teams, especially in social media, are becoming due to the constantly changing environment:
Between in-house teams being stretched to the limits, and agency budgets and staff shrinking, it’s a hard time to be in communications right now.
I am 0% shocked by the number of extremely amazing strategic communications professionals that are looking to RUN, not walk, away from a career in social media admist three months of nonstop crisis communications, stress, and minimal support.

Take care of your people, marketing leaders. They’re on the front lines right now.
