The new Congress is extraordinary
The 116th Congress being sworn in today, and no matter your political leanings, it’s a day to celebrate.
Congress will have the highest percentage of women and the most diverse representation by race in its 230-year history.
A record 102 women will serve in the House of Representatives, and five new women will become senators.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib will be the first Muslim women to serve. Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland will be the first indigenous women.
Ayana Pressley and Jahana Hayes will be the first black women to serve from Massachusetts and Connecticut, and Veronica Escobar and Sylvia Garcia will be Texas' first Latinas elected to Congress.
And something that I personally celebrate: Paul Ryan, con-man extraordinaire, is leaving office with a 12 percent approval rating.
2019 is looking up.
